26/11 : 5 heroes who saved hundreds of lives during the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks

November 26th marks the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attack. Not just the horror, but also the heroes who saved hundreds during the siege of the Taj Hotel.
On November 26, 2023, the world commemorates the 15th anniversary of the tragic 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai that unfolded in 2008. During this devastating event, 10 terrorists from Pakistan orchestrated simultaneous assaults across various areas of the Maharashtra city, resulting in the loss of 166 lives and injuries to over 300 individuals. The valor displayed by the Indian Army and Mumbai Police ultimately led to the elimination of all the Pakistani terrorists, with one being captured. Nevertheless, the assailants inflicted indelible terror on iconic landmarks such as the Taj Palace Hotel, Oberoi Trident, Nariman House, and other targets in Mumbai. As the scars of the 26/11 terror attacks persist, let us take a moment to honor the unsung heroes who, amidst the chaos, risked their lives to save hundreds in Mumbai.



Five Heroes of the November 26th Attacks


Tukaram Omble
Mumbai Police Sub-Inspector (ASI) Tukaram Omble, despite having been fired over 40 times for his job, was the leader of Lashkar terrorist Ajmal. He single-handedly arrested Kasab, leading to several murders and the exposure of Pakistan's terrorist plots.

Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan
Indian Army Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was part of an elite unit of the National Security Guard (NSG) responsible for neutralizing terrorists at the Taj Palace Hotel. He entered the hotel with other officers and engaged in a gunfight with the terrorists, while simultaneously evacuating more than 50 hostages. He was shot dead by terrorists in a hotel, saving dozens of lives.

Mallika Jagad
Mallika Jagad was the banquet manager at the Taj Palace Hotel at the time of the attack. When gunshots were heard outside the hall, she ordered the guests to get under the tables and be quiet. She also separated her spouse to reduce the risk of losing her entire family. She was ultimately able to get 50 guests to safety without any casualties among the group.

Karambir Singh
Khan Karambir Singh Khan was the general manager of Taj Mumbai and was elsewhere at the time of the attack. He immediately returned to the hotel and led the evacuation, leading hundreds of people to safety. Mr. Kang was shot dead by terrorists in his hotel, and his wife and son were also killed in the attack.

Thomas Varghese
Thomas Varghese was a head waiter at Wasabi, a Japanese restaurant in the Taj, and was on duty when he heard gunshots in the hallway. He immediately ordered all guests to squat and eventually evacuate. Varghese was the last to leave the restaurant, but was shot dead by a terrorist in an alley.
